Important for anyone using a UPI ID to make a payment: Scammers may use fake UPI IDs that look similar to a real business’s UPI ID. Before approving, verify that the bank-registered recipient name shown for that UPI ID in your UPI app matches the person or business you intend to send money to.

What is NoQR?

NoQR is an Android app that helps you find a business’s UPI ID without scanning a QR code, tapping an NFC tag, opening a link, or typing it manually.

This app is built for people who understand how UPI works, what a UPI ID is, how to make a payment using one, and the safety measures to follow. If you are new to UPI, first read NPCI’s overview of UPI.

How NoQR works and how to set it up

Before approving: check that the recipient name shown in your UPI app matches the person or business you intend to send money to. See Bank of India’s UPI safety guidance and ICICI Bank’s UPI FAQ.

This is not yet another UPI app. NoQR has no payment functionality. It only helps find a nearby UPI ID; the transaction happens in the UPI app you choose.

Security checks along the way

  • Watch for misleading IDs: scammers may use fake QR codes or Wi-Fi names that look similar to a real business’s UPI ID. The important final check is to double-check and verify that the recipient name shown in your UPI app matches the person or business you intend to send money to before approving.
  • You choose the UPI ID: NoQR lists advertised UPI IDs near you and lets you choose the one you intend to use.
  • You confirm it again: the next screen clearly displays the selected UPI ID before you continue.
  • You choose the UPI app: after confirming the selected UPI ID, NoQR opens the UPI app you choose. Verify the recipient’s name and approve using that app’s normal security checks.
  • Only the virtual address is visible: the business advertises its UPI ID through the Wi-Fi name, similar to displaying a QR code publicly at the business.
  • Three chances to verify: you can review the UPI ID when you select it from the list, again on NoQR’s confirmation screen, and again when your UPI app shows the recipient details before approval.

Where NoQR helps

Here are a few situations where this can be useful.

Changing the receiving account

Businesses may need to change the bank account or UPI ID they use to receive payments. Every QR copy then has to be found and replaced across counters and locations.

Old stickers are often torn off or covered with new ones, leaving layers, tape marks, and an untidy look.

With NoQR: they can update the UPI ID in one place by renaming the Wi-Fi hotspot, instead of finding and replacing every QR code.

Keeping a space tidy

Restaurants and other businesses put real effort into creating beautiful tables, reception areas, and interiors. Yet copies of the same QR code often end up on every table or stuck across walls, which can make an otherwise thoughtful space look cluttered and become an eyesore.

With NoQR: one nearby Wi-Fi name can make the business’s UPI ID discoverable throughout that area, without placing a QR code on every table or wall.

At a fuel station

A QR code may be stuck on a wall or near the pump, making it difficult to scan from inside a car. People may end up unlocking their phone and handing it to the attendant so the attendant can scan the QR code or enter a UPI ID.

With NoQR: the customer can find the station’s UPI ID from inside the car while the fuel is being filled, without needing the attendant to scan a code or repeat the ID. This saves time for the customer and attendant, helps the queue move faster, may save a little fuel from idling, and helps the transaction finish faster.

Making things easier for staff

At some businesses, employees wear a printed QR code around their neck like an ID badge, carry a card or sheet of paper containing the UPI ID, or even write it on their hand so they can show it when needed. It is one more thing to carry, keep safe, and replace when the details change.

With NoQR: the UPI ID can be available through the nearby Wi-Fi name, so staff do not need to wear or carry a printed QR code or paper with them.

Notes

Is it safe to display a UPI ID?

Yes. A UPI ID is meant to be shared to receive payments, much like a QR code. It is not a bank account number or UPI PIN. For example, BHIM UPI publicly displays UPI IDs for relief funds and charities on its donation page. Still, always check the recipient name in your UPI app before approving.

Does NoQR support phone numbers?

No. NoQR supports only UPI IDs and does not display or use phone numbers. This keeps the app focused on UPI ID discovery and avoids using phone numbers for privacy.

Why does NoQR ask me to confirm the UPI ID?

NoQR is designed to keep the checks deliberate. It first shows the selected UPI ID for confirmation. You then choose the UPI app, verify the recipient’s name there, and approve from there.

Why can’t I set a default UPI app?

NoQR asks you to choose a UPI app each time so it is clear which app you are using for the transaction. This gives you one more intentional choice before you continue.

How are nearby UPI IDs ordered when there are many nearby businesses?

When multiple businesses are nearby, NoQR shows the advertised UPI IDs with the strongest Wi-Fi signal first, making closer signals easier to discover. The first item is not a recommendation or verification, so choose the business you intend to use and verify the recipient’s name in your UPI app before approving.

How do I report a bug or issue?

Post it in NoQR Feedback with a short description of what happened and your phone model and Android version, if available.

Is NoQR available on iOS?

Not yet. iOS places tighter limits on apps finding nearby Wi-Fi names, so the Android approach cannot be used in the same way. An iOS version would need a different standard or protocol and may require external hardware to broadcast through a protocol supported by iOS. That approach is currently under study and development is in progress. Follow NoQR Announcements for updates.

Does NoQR verify the business or recipient?

No. NoQR only helps find a nearby UPI ID. It does not verify the business or person behind it. Always double-check and verify the recipient’s name in your UPI app before approving.

Why doesn’t NoQR have a Scan QR Code button alongside Search?

QR scanning is already available in regular consumer UPI apps. NoQR does not duplicate that existing feature; it provides an additional way to find a nearby business UPI ID.
